How to Choose the Right Size Photography Print
Share
Choosing the right size print is one of those decisions that feels simple until you're standing in front of a blank wall wondering if you've got it completely wrong. Trust me - you haven't. You just need a few honest pointers, and suddenly it all clicks into place.
I get asked about this a lot, so I wanted to put something together that actually helps. Here's everything I wish someone had told me when I first started putting art on my walls.
Start with the wall, not the print
The most common mistake is falling in love with a size before you've measured your space. A print that feels bold and alive on screen can get lost on a large wall, and something that looks modest in a thumbnail can completely transform a smaller room in the best possible way.
Before anything else, grab a tape measure. Take note of the width of the wall, or the piece of furniture the print will sit above - a sofa, a bed, a console table. A good rule of thumb is that your artwork should fill around two thirds of that width. So if your sofa is 180cm wide, you're looking for something in the region of 120cm across. It doesn't have to be exact - this is art, not architecture - but it gives you a great starting point.

A quick guide to each size
8×10" - The intimate piece. This is your bedside table, your bathroom wall, your reading nook. It's perfect for smaller spaces and works beautifully grouped with other prints in a gallery wall. If you're buying your first piece and want to dip your toes in, this is a wonderful place to start.
12×16" and 12×18" - The sweet spot. These are the sizes I'd recommend to almost anyone. Versatile, impactful, and comfortable in a huge range of spaces - above a desk, in a hallway, as the anchor of a larger arrangement. The extra height of the 12×18" is particularly lovely for coastal scenes with expansive skies. Either size has a presence without ever feeling like it's competing with the room.
16×20" - The statement piece. This is where things get exciting. A 16×20" commands the wall in the best way - it suits living rooms, main bedrooms, and anywhere you want the art to set the mood for the whole space. Give it room to breathe and it will genuinely stop people in their tracks.
18×24" - The showstopper. This is the print you build a room around. Wide open walls, open plan living spaces, above a generous sofa or bed. There is something genuinely special about living with a large fine art print every day - it changes how a space feels in a way that's hard to put into words until you experience it.

Don't underestimate the light in your room
Darker rooms benefit from bolder, more saturated work - quieter pieces can lose their energy in low light. Brighter rooms give you far more flexibility. My own photography leans into vivid, high-contrast colour - deep teals, warm golds, coral and copper skies - which tends to hold its presence beautifully across all kinds of lighting. If you're still not sure, most smartphones now have an augmented reality feature that lets you preview artwork on your actual wall before you commit. It's genuinely useful.
Not ready to go large just yet?
That's completely fine - and honestly, that's exactly what digital downloads are there for. For £9.99 you get a high resolution print-ready file that you can take to any local print lab or upload to an online service - Printful, Artifact Uprising, and Mpix are all brilliant options wherever you are in the world. It's a lovely low-pressure way to get the work on your wall and see how it feels in your space before investing in something larger.
